Route Overview

Suggested Route:
Start from NoriNori Nakagyo shop → Cycle east to Kamo River → Follow Kamo River North along the East Bank → Nanzen-ji Temple → Philosopher’s Path → Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion)

Distance: About 7–9 km one way, mostly flat and easy, suitable for all levels.


Before Departure

Our shop in Nakagyo Ward opens at 9:00 AM. We recommend picking up your bike and starting at 9:00 AM to avoid crowds.

Check your bike, bring water, sun protection, some coins, and a power bank. Free cycling maps are available in our shop.


Suggested Itinerary

Times are approximate and flexible.

9:00 Pick up your bike at NoriNori and set off
9:00–9:15 Ride east along Oike-dori or Sanjo-dori to Kamo River East Bank
9:15–9:35 Cycle north along Kamo River to Nanzen-ji area
9:35–10:30 Visit Nanzen-ji Temple and the Aqueduct
10:30–11:00 Cycle local lanes to Philosopher’s Path start
11:00–12:00 Stroll/slow ride Philosopher’s Path, stop by cafés and galleries
12:00–13:00 Visit Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion)
13:00–14:00 Lunch at local restaurant/café
14:00–15:00 Explore Kitashirakawa, Shimogamo Shrine, or ride back
15:00 Return to the shop

Route Directions

Start (NoriNori Nakagyo shop):
Head east from the shop via Oike-dori or Sanjo-dori, go straight to the Kamo River, and join the east bank cycling path.

Cycle north along the river:
Enjoy a scenic ride north along the Kamo River for about 15–20 minutes. Stop for photos at riverside spots.

Turn towards Nanzen-ji Temple:
Use Google Maps to navigate. Turn left towards Nanzen-ji Temple, which is about 3 minutes from the riverside.

Visit Nanzen-ji and the aqueduct:
After your visit, return to the main road and follow the signs to Philosopher’s Path.

Ride or walk along Philosopher’s Path:
This path can be narrow or busy—walk your bike if needed. Explore cafés, art shops, and the beautiful canal.

Ginkaku-ji (end point):
Ginkaku-ji is at the end of the Philosopher’s Path. Park your bike in the official parking lot outside.


Main Sights & Cycling Tips

Nanzen-ji Temple

  • Highlight: Kyoto’s famous Zen temple with rock gardens, Sanmon Gate, and a unique aqueduct.

  • Bike Parking: Bicycle parking is available outside the temple.

  • Admission: 600 yen for the garden.

  • Recommended time: 40–50 minutes

Philosopher’s Path

  • Highlight: Lined with cherry trees, artistic ambiance, picturesque canal views.

  • Cycling Tip: Walk your bike in narrow or crowded areas; ride slowly.

  • Recommended time: 50–60 minutes

Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion)

  • Highlight: Renowned for its dry landscape garden and wabi-sabi beauty.

  • Bike Parking: Designated parking at the entrance.

  • Admission: 500 yen.

  • Recommended time: 50–60 minutes


Lunch Recommendations

There are many local restaurants, cafés, and sweet shops near Ginkaku-ji and along Philosopher’s Path.
Try matcha desserts, Japanese curry, bento, and handmade sweets.


Afternoon Activities

You can explore Kitashirakawa (for unique cafés), visit Shimogamo Shrine (nature and heritage), or simply ride back to NoriNori shop along Kamo River.

  • Buy tickets on-site; cash is preferred.

  • Allow extra time during weekends or cherry blossom/autumn seasons.


Cycling & Parking Tips

  • Always use official bike parking lots. Do not park randomly.

  • Yield to pedestrians on Philosopher’s Path and narrow lanes; walk your bike if necessary.
