Why choose this northern Kyoto bike route?

If you are looking for a quieter Kyoto cycling route beyond the busiest sightseeing areas, this loop gives you riverside riding, green foothill scenery and several lesser-visited northern districts in one day. An E-Bike rental in Kyoto is the easiest choice for this distance, while confident riders can also complete the loop on a standard city bike.

Timing & riding tips

  • Start around 9:00 AM if you want time for temple visits, photos and lunch.
  • An E-Bike is recommended. The route is not a mountain-bike trail, but it is longer and less flat than a central Kyoto ride.
  • Prioritize larger roads, legal bicycle routes and Kamo River sections. Do not take narrow shortcuts, stairs or steep mountain paths.
  • At Takaragaike and temple grounds, follow signs. If cycling is restricted, get off and walk the bicycle.
  • Use designated bicycle parking only. Review our Kyoto cycling rules and bicycle parking guide before departure.
